The Pitch
There are instances when you have the opportunity to introduce yourself and your product or service to people who could be allies in your venture. Take the proper steps in your spare time to construct and rehearse a quick attention grabbing anecdote as well as a longer compelling story to use on call. The pitch should always be evolving as you refine your message.
The term elevator pitch references captivating someone’s attention within the short ride together moving from one floor to another. Typically, this pitch should be within 50 words or less about your project. This idea should be grounded in the experience, with the aim of inspiring and igniting action within your targeted community.
To get started, write out your concept description within 500 words or less of what you hope to achieve. If you can’t clearly explain your idea in 500 words, how do you expect to in 50? Think about a beginning, middle and end that arch and loop back to your opening statement. Start with phrases like, “My mission is to…” that locks in the core direction of your business. After that, explain a brief and concise background giving context as to why this is your mission. Connect it to a personal experience that has a wider degree of relevance to the audience you are targeting.
Follow up with a phrase like, “Utilizing my background in…” to assure confidence to the listener about the field you are working within. After illustrating your knowledge and skills, explain how those will be applied towards the overall mission. It is not necessary, but if your business as a community element, make sure to emphasize the relevance, benefits and impact.
Though you wouldn’t address the budget within a concept description, for your own piece of mind, form a budget breakdown of how you will utilize any funds. This doesn’t have to be a dollar for dollar breakdown similar to an itemized receipt, yet more of an overview depicting the primary areas that need to be fulfilled to achieve the mission.
If you have previous work and other examples of your work you would like to highlight to give a sense of what you can do. After that, ask yourself what else they should know about you. Why are you interested in this mission?
