Creative Endeavour
One thing to note is being a professional artist is almost impossible. The odds that you’re going to fail is high, which should give you a sense of humility. It’s very difficult to sustain yourself as an artist because it combines mind, body and soul; a state of being fully present and focused which takes a lot out of you. The artistic endeavor is not a practical means for stability, but if done properly, can bring a fruitful existence.
In addition to all the skills that goes into creating, you have to know how to work in such a way to sustain creating on a daily basis. Being technically proficient and/or artistically brilliant is not a guarantee for “success” (self-sustaining financial stability). Creativity is only half the equation for providing unique solutions, while the other half is workflow, or the ability to manage expelling to rejuvenating that creative energy.
To build self-sustaining financial stability, you’ll need a contradictory array of skills that don’t go together. A lot of creatives would rather spend their time just doing the work if only someone else could document, market and sell the fruits of their labor. Because that is highly unlikely, an introvert has to learn to become an extrovert. An award personal will need to have interpersonal skills. Someone who is more interested in things has to show interest in people and perhaps someone stubborn will have to learn to be open-minded.
You have to live while you pursue your art, but you have to let go of yourself for the pursuit itself. You also have to grapple with the reality that the city, friends, family most likely may not be the best for your career. In order to go as far as you can; giving everything you have to give, you most likely need to go somewhere else.
Go to an environment that will force you to reconstitute yourself and learn an entirely new way of being. Being in a new environment allows you to transform your personality. An advantage to moving somewhere drastically new, you can leave old parts of yourself behind and remold to a new configuration if you’re willing to take advantage of it.
What is really important today is that you have to really constitute your own platforms yourself and you can’t fully rely on the established infrastructure because a lot of them are tenuous. Only you know how you want your artistic voice to be heard and communicate with an audience, but you have to realize success has no chance until after you step beyond your comfort zone.
