It’s important to allow time for everything to be right with a brand before going public. Your clients dreams may be big, but they need to be ready to invest in those dreams seriously. Based on experience, even a rushed job can lead to shockingly expensive problems down the road. To make an immediate and lasting impact while solving complex business and industry challenges, you should know a few important questions before agreeing to anything.
This is directed towards independent workers - entrepreneurs and freelancers alike. Introducing a new client to your organization or your individual professional working process is much like going on a blind date. You know a little bit about the backstory on who you are meeting, but everything is surface level bullet-points. Be warm and welcoming and focus on asking good questions that go deeper, then listen closely. Take notes and have follow up questions (who, what, when, where, why, how) to their statements.
It’s important to note, you’re objective as a contract worker is to dedicate your expertise to your client’s overall mission. Because of this, you should be highly selective with who you work with. On the example of dating, you wouldn’t want to start a relationship with anyone who didn’t see you as an equal, right? You also wouldn’t want to be in a relationship with someone who was vague or irresponsible. Just like dating, you’re wanting to learn more about the person sitting across from you, while listening for red flags to address upfront and spare any headaches later on.
Below is a set of base questions that can be modified from client to client. Certain one’s may not be appropriate, while others need to be expanded on. You’re questions should reflect your level of experience and professionalism.
